About
About Mekong Odyssey
Mekong Odyssey plans private journeys of five to nine days through the southern Mekong Delta, built around the heritage of its Khmer, Kinh, Hoa and Cham communities. This page says how we work, what we do not do well, and why you will not find reviews here.
Who we are
What we do
We plan long, private journeys through the parts of the Mekong Delta that most visitors never reach: the Khmer pagoda country of Tra Vinh and Soc Trang, the shrines and Cham villages around Chau Doc, the Funan site at Oc Eo and the old port of Ha Tien. Each journey is for one party, with its own vehicle and its own guide, and lasts from five to nine days.
We do this because the delta’s heritage is usually sold in fragments. A day trip from Ho Chi Minh City shows a boat and an orchard. A river cruise passes Chau Doc in an afternoon. A pagoda tour from Can Tho squeezes Tra Vinh and Soc Trang into one long day in the car. None of these is wrong, but none of them lets you see how four communities live in one landscape. That takes days, and early mornings, and someone to explain what you are looking at.
How we plan
- The heritage table comes first. For every route we list the sites, the community each belongs to, its date and the source for that date, the opening hours if anyone publishes them, and what to wear. If we cannot source something, the table says so.
- Sources are named and dated. Official pages first — UNESCO, the Can Tho city portal, government and national press — then operators and travel guides, labelled as such. We note the date we checked.
- Sacred places at the right hours. Pagodas early, mosques outside prayer times, Sam Mountain before the pilgrims. The route is built around those hours, not around the hotel breakfast.
- Honest about decline and change. Floating markets are much smaller than they were; Sam Mountain is commercial at its foot; Ha Tien has a handful of sites, not an old quarter. We say so before you book.
- Prices on request, line by line. We quote per trip, with hotels named and each cost on its own line.
What we do not do well
- Short trips. We do not sell day trips or two-day trips. If you have a day or two, other operators serve you better than we would.
- Boats and homestays as the focus. We use boats to cross rivers and to reach Phnom Penh or Phu Quoc, and hotels for the nights. If you want a river cruise or a homestay as the heart of the trip, we are not the right choice.
- Large groups. Our journeys are private and work for small parties. Coach-sized groups need different hotels, vehicles and timing than we plan for.
- Luxury everywhere. Outside Can Tho, Chau Doc and Phu Quoc, the delta’s hotels are simple. We cannot change that, and we will not pretend otherwise.
- Languages other than English. Our guides work in English. Ask if you need another language and we will say honestly whether we can arrange it.
Why there are no reviews on this site
You will not find star ratings, testimonials or quotes from past travellers here. A review on a company’s own website cannot be checked, and we would rather not ask you to trust something you cannot verify. What we can give you instead is checkable: the sources and dates behind every fact on the route pages, a quote with each hotel and cost named, and straight answers to any question you send before you book.
We also avoid claims we cannot support. You will not read here how many years we have operated, how many travellers we have guided or which prizes we have won. If a detail about us matters to your decision, ask, and we will answer in writing.
How we work with communities
The places on our routes are homes and places of worship before they are sights. In practice that means small parties, quiet voices and modest dress; a donation at every pagoda we visit together; asking before entering a Cham house or photographing a monk; and avoiding prayer times and private ceremonies. Our etiquette page sets out what we ask of travellers, and our guides follow the same rules.
We do not add shopping stops to earn commissions. If you want to buy weaving in Chau Phong or bánh pía in Soc Trang, your guide will take you to the place and leave the choice to you.
Where to go next
Start with the four cultures if the delta is new to you, the journeys overview if you want to compare routes, or the pricing page to see how a quote is built. When you are ready, the contact page explains what to send.
Common questions
Questions travellers ask most
Are you a travel agency or a tour operator?
We plan and run private journeys: we design the route, book the hotels, vehicle, guide and boats, and stay responsible for the trip while you travel.
Do your guides belong to the communities you visit?
We assign guides by route and language. If a guide from a particular community matters to you, tell us and we will say what is possible for your dates.
Why only the Mekong Delta?
Because doing one region properly is enough work. Our routes can end in Phnom Penh or Phu Quoc, and you can join them to a longer trip arranged elsewhere.
