Four places where the delta’s communities live

Four towns that hold most of the southern delta’s living heritage. For each one we say what it really is, how many nights it needs, how to get there, what it costs on the ground and when you should leave it out.

Road distances are from central Ho Chi Minh City on OpenStreetMap routing; the hours are our planning ranges, not timetables. The last column reflects the 2025 merger of provinces: the town names have not changed, but Tra Vinh, Soc Trang and the old Kien Giang province are no longer provinces in their own right.

Why these four

We give a place its own page when two things are true: it holds heritage that belongs to one of the delta’s communities, and it deserves at least two nights. At the 2019 census Soc Trang and Tra Vinh had the two largest Khmer communities of any province in Vietnam. Chau Doc is where Kinh pilgrims, Cham Muslims, Khmer villagers and Hoa traders meet at the foot of one mountain; UNESCO’s 2024 inscription of the Bà Chúa Xứ festival names all four. Ha Tien is the old port governed by the Mạc family on the Gulf of Thailand, and the natural end of a westward journey.

Several places appear only inside the routes. Can Tho is a convenient overnight with a Cantonese assembly hall and a merchant’s house, but it is a large modern city and most travellers need only one night. Vinh Long has its nineteenth-century Confucian temple, which fits into a driving day. Oc Eo – Ba Thê is a day visit from Chau Doc or a stop on the way to Ha Tien. Phu Quoc and Phnom Penh are endings, not subjects of this site.

Reading a destination page

  • What the place is, plainly, including what it is not
  • How many nights, and what you lose with fewer
  • When to go, with the rainy months and festival dates
  • How to get there by road, boat or air, with distances and the date we checked
  • What it costs on the ground, using published figures and saying where there are none
  • When to skip it — every page has this section

Combining the places

Tra Vinh and Soc Trang belong together: they are about 63 km apart by the ferry road, and the Khmer Delta journey spends two nights in each. Chau Doc is about 190 km from Soc Trang, so linking the Khmer south-east with the north-west usually runs through Can Tho, as the Four Cultures route does. Chau Doc to Ha Tien is about 93 km, a short drive that the Delta to the Sea route stretches with a morning at Oc Eo.

The one place we suggest you never rush is Chau Doc. Sam Mountain and the Cham villages deserve separate days, and the Festival Journey gives it four nights.

What these pages leave out

Floating markets, orchards, homestays and river cruises are not covered here. They are real parts of the delta, but they are not what this site is about, and other guides cover them in more depth. Where a floating market sits on a route — Cai Rang near Can Tho — we say honestly that it is much smaller than in the past and increasingly made up of tourist boats.

Common questions

Questions travellers ask most

Which place would you choose with only two nights?

Chau Doc, because Sam Mountain and the Cham villages give you two communities in one base. But two nights in the delta is shorter than any journey we sell.

Are Tra Vinh and Soc Trang very different?

Both are Khmer towns with many pagodas. Soc Trang also has a visible Hoa community and the Ok Om Bok boat races; Tra Vinh has Ao Bà Om and a quieter countryside.

Do I need to know the new province names?

Not for travel. Signs, buses and people still use the town names. We mention the new provinces only where they matter for maps or official notices.

Is Can Tho worth a page of its own?

For a heritage trip it is a one-night stop with two key sites, so we cover it inside the routes.
