Four journeys across the delta’s heritage

Four private routes, each built around a different part of the delta’s heritage and each with its own table of sites, dates and sources. Pick the one that matches your days and the communities you most want to meet, then change what you like.

“Long drives” counts the days with more than about two hours on the road. The delta is flat and the roads are good, but distances add up: Ho Chi Minh City to Chau Doc is about 235 km, and Chau Doc to Ha Tien a further 93 km or so. We place those days where they do least harm, usually after an early morning visit.

Which one fits

The Khmer Delta, 5 days

For travellers who want depth over distance. Two nights in Tra Vinh and two in Soc Trang, the two former provinces where Khmer Theravada pagodas are part of everyday life. You see Chùa Âng beside Ao Bà Om, the egret pagoda of Nodol, the Bat pagoda and the mosaic walls of Sà Lôn, and end with a Cantonese assembly hall in Can Tho. Read the route.

The Festival Journey, 6 days

Timed to the Bà Chúa Xứ festival at Sam Mountain (22nd–27th day of the fourth lunar month, inscribed by UNESCO in 2024), with an alternative version for Ok Om Bok, the Khmer full-moon festival of the tenth lunar month. Only for travellers whose dates are fixed around the festival. Read the route.

The Four Cultures, 7 days

The full crossing: Khmer Tra Vinh and Soc Trang, Hoa and Kinh Can Tho, then three nights at Chau Doc for Sam Mountain, the Cham villages and a day at Oc Eo. It ends either with the morning speedboat up the Bassac to Phnom Penh or with a drive back to Ho Chi Minh City. Read the route.

Delta to the Sea, 8 days

West instead of south: Vinh Long’s Confucian temple, Can Tho, Chau Doc and Sam Mountain, the Funan site at Oc Eo, the Mạc family town of Ha Tien on the Gulf of Thailand, and a fast boat to two nights on Phu Quoc to finish. Read the route.

What every journey includes

  • A private air-conditioned vehicle and driver for the whole journey
  • A private English-speaking guide from the first morning to the last transfer
  • Hotels named on your quote, with daily breakfast
  • Entrance fees where a site charges one, and a donation at each pagoda we visit with you
  • The heritage table for your route, updated with anything we confirm before you travel
  • Ferry or boat tickets that are part of the route (Ha Tien–Phu Quoc; Chau Doc–Phnom Penh where chosen)

Not included: international flights, visas, travel insurance, most lunches and dinners, drinks and tips. The pricing page sets out why, and how to book explains the steps from first message to confirmed journey.

Changing a route

The four routes are starting points. The most common changes we make are adding a night at Chau Doc so Sam Mountain and the Cham villages are not on the same day, swapping Phu Quoc for a flight home from Can Tho, and reversing a route so that it starts in Phnom Penh and comes down the river into Vietnam. Each change is priced as a whole new version so you can compare.

Some changes we will advise against. Fitting the Four Cultures route into five days means dropping either the Khmer south or the Cham north and spending most of the remaining time in the car. Cutting Chau Doc to one night means arriving in the afternoon and leaving the next morning, with Sam Mountain at its most crowded in between. We will tell you which parts suffer and let you decide.

Want a different length?

Nine days works well with an extra night at Chau Doc or Ha Tien. Tell us what you have and we will draft it.

Who these journeys are not for

  • Anyone with fewer than five days in the delta
  • Travellers who want long hours on boats; we use boats where they carry you somewhere, not as an activity
  • Visitors who would rather not dress conservatively — most days include a pagoda, shrine or mosque
  • Travellers who need everything to be step-free; temple grounds, ferries and boat landings are uneven

Common questions

Questions travellers ask most

Which journey is right for a first visit to Vietnam?

If the delta is one part of a longer trip, the Khmer Delta (five days) or the Four Cultures (seven days) fit most easily between Ho Chi Minh City and the rest of the country. Delta to the Sea suits travellers who want to end on an island.

Can two routes be combined?

Yes. The Khmer Delta followed by the Chau Doc and Ha Tien part of Delta to the Sea makes a nine-day route across the whole south-west. We quote it as one journey.

How much time is spent in the car?

Each route page lists the drive for every day. Most days have one to two hours; the longest road day, Chau Doc back to Ho Chi Minh City, is about four and a half to five and a half hours, and we break long days with a visit.

Are the hotels luxurious?

Outside Can Tho, Chau Doc and Phu Quoc the hotel choice in the delta is limited, and in Tra Vinh, Soc Trang and Ha Tien it is simple. We name each hotel on your quote and tell you plainly what it is like.
