Flooded fields reflecting the sky near Chau Doc during the high-water season

When to go: seasons and festivals

The delta has two seasons, a flood that changes the upper delta every autumn, and two festivals that change everything around them. Here is how each affects a heritage journey, with the figures and dates we could source.

Overview

The year at a glance

JFMAMJJASONDKhmer south-east (Tra Vinh, Soc Trang)Chau Doc and Sam MountainHa Tien and the boat to Phu Quoc

Based on Can Tho climate normals (dry December–April, rainy May–November) and VNAT’s Sep–Nov flood-season advice for Chau Doc.

In short: December to April is dry and the easiest time for a long journey. May to November brings rain, mostly in heavy afternoon showers, and the upper delta floods from about September. Neither season closes the pagodas, temples or mosques; what changes is heat, mosquitoes, river levels and the reliability of boats.

Figures are Can Tho climate normals, the nearest published series for most of our routes. Dengue in Vietnam peaks from June to October, mostly in the centre and south, so repellent matters in the rainy months.

The festivals

FestivalCommunityLunar dateWhereWhat we know about the solar date
Bà Chúa Xứ festivalKinh, with Khmer, Cham and Hoa22nd–27th day of the fourth lunar month (UNESCO); main rituals on the 25th (Việt Nam News)Sam Mountain, Chau DocFalls in May or June; we confirm each year
Ok Om BokKhmerFull moon of the tenth lunar monthSoc Trang (races), Tra Vinh (lanterns)2025: 3–5 November (Can Tho city edition)

The Bà Chúa Xứ festival was inscribed in 2024 on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. It brings very large crowds to Sam Mountain: plan for heat, queues and full hotels, and book early. Ok Om Bok has been national intangible heritage since 2022; in 2025 it featured 60 ghe Ngo teams on the Maspéro river and a moon offering at Chùa Kh’leang.

We do not publish future solar dates until the organisers announce them. The Festival Journey is built to fit either festival.

The flood season

Every year the Mekong rises and spreads across the upper delta. VNAT recommends September to November at Chau Doc, when the floodwaters fill the Tra Su forest. In 2025 the government forecast the flood peak at Tan Chau and Chau Doc for 8–13 October, with levels around alarm levels I–II and well below the 2000 records. Downstream, riverside streets in Can Tho and Vinh Long flood at the highest tides in October and November, and residents were advised to limit travel during high tide hours.

For a cultural journey the flood is mostly scenery, and road travel continues. What it changes is boats — river cruise ships sometimes cannot reach Chau Doc under low bridges in high water — and the timing of a few riverside visits.

What the rainy season is really like

Rain in the delta usually comes as heavy showers rather than all-day drizzle, and the September total at Can Tho is about 451 mm over some 22 rainy days. You will get wet, and some boat crossings may wait for a storm to pass, but a pagoda visit rarely needs to be cancelled. In return, the landscape is green, the fields full, and the towns quieter outside the festivals.

If you can choose, December to February combines dry weather with the coolest temperatures of the year — still around 30 °C by day.

Common questions

Questions travellers ask most

Is the rainy season a bad time for a cultural trip?

Not a bad time, a different one. Sites stay open; you plan around afternoon showers and mosquitoes.

When is Ok Om Bok this year?

At the full moon of the tenth lunar month. The organisers set the programme each year; in 2025 it ran 3 to 5 November. We confirm dates when you enquire.

Does the flood stop travel to Chau Doc?

Not by road. It can stop large river cruise ships reaching Chau Doc under low bridges.

What about Tết, the Lunar New Year?

Many businesses close for several days and hotels and transport are busy. We can plan a journey then, but say so early and expect fewer choices.
